Ciao a tutti booklovers, oggi recensione di un "classico" del genere Dark Academia, ovvero If We Were Villains, di M.L. Rio.

As one of seven young actors studying Shakespeare at an elite arts college, Oliver and his friends play the same roles onstage and off: hero, villain, tyrant, temptress, ingenue, extra. But when the casting changes, and the secondary characters usurp the stars, the plays spill dangerously over into life, and one of them is found dead. The rest face their greatest acting challenge yet: convincing the police, and themselves, that they are blameless.
RECENSIONE:
Oliver Marks è un appassionato di teatro, studente ad un college d'elite. Lui e i suoi sette amici eseguono i loro ruoli alla perfezione anche al di fuori del teatro. Ma purtroppo, o per fortuna, piano piano il casting cambia, e la piece teatrale inizia a strabordare nella vita reale, cosa che porterà, questa volta purtroppo, ad un omicidio.
Oliver viene giudicato colpevole, e il ragazzo finisce dieci anni in prigione. Il detective che lo ha arrestato, alla sua uscita di prigione, vuole davvero sapere che cosa è successo quella notte di dieci anni prima...
Comincia così un libro che mi ha stregata. If we were villains aveva tutte le carte in regola per piacermi, e lo ha fatto degnamente. Su una cosa non sono d'accordo, ed è la caratterizzazione di alcuni personaggi, soprattutto Meredith, la "tentatrice", che viene fin troppo sessualizzata, e la cui complessità non è stata sfruttata al meglio.
Per il resto, lo stile della Rio mi è piaciuto molto, mi ha ricordato Donna Tartt e Dio di Illusioni.
